Who runs the Games? … Girls.
The Aussie girls continue to dominate the Olympic Games, with over two-thirds of all medals being claimed by Australia, being worn proudly by our girls.
Paris 2024 is the first Games where we have seen gender parity amongst the athletes, with this echoed through Australia’s results. So far, Australia has won a total of 33 medals, 13 being gold, but it wasn’t until day seven of the Games that a gold medal was awarded to a male Australian athlete (swimmer Cameron McEvoy in the 50m freestyle). Australia’s eight gold medals before that were all won by women.
It’s been a year of records, glory, and comebacks. Highlighted by Saya Sakakibara, who had a stunning comeback off the brutal crash that left her badly concussed and stretchered from the track in Tokyo 2020, which crushed her medal hopes in 2021 and evoked memories of the terrifying crash that left her brother Kai in a coma and with a traumatic brain injury. He was trackside to watch his sister’s victory—as she wore his number, 77—and was the first person Saya rushed to embrace following the medal ceremony.
And if you think sibling rivalry is tough for most parents, spare a thought for the Fox family! Jess has dominated on the big stage for years, but now sister Noemie has said, “Hold my beer, sis,” and claimed gold of her own. Bloody proud parent day for them and makes Christmas lunch so much less awkward!
Current Australian Gold Medal Tally as of Aug. 6, 12pm AEST.
