Producing a Quintet and taking out your local premiership in just the second year of your training career is a massive feat, and for Gold Coast Trainer Adam Campton it seemed a dream out of reach earlier this season. But with his team’s explosive turn of foot, they turned their season around for an incredible shootout for the premiership title against fellow Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.
“We went into the day just wanting to beat Toby and win the premiership” Campton stated. “But to do that with five winners and to have our apprentice Jace (McMurray) ride three of those it was a special day”.
“He’s a champion kid. He’s riding really well and has got a big career ahead of him. He’s got a level head on him which makes my job easier and his life easier.”
Having returned from Hong Kong and setting up base just two years ago, for most of Campton’s training career he has been working around the recent renovation at the Gold Coast Turf Club. With the B-grass having just come back into action and still no course proper the young trainer admits it has been tough to nail out his training regime.
“It’s been challenging, some people think that I want to poly to stay but I honestly just want the grass to be back and so do the horses. It’s challenging, especially for our young horses to get them ready and to town [without the grass] and to be competitive against the likes of Gollan, Heathcote and Annabel. You just need everything to go right.”
“Once it’s done it will be an incredible club. They’ve been very good to me, they were the first to give me a crack [since returning from Hong Kong]. They granted me boxes and that’s the reason why I’m back. I’m very grateful for what the club has done for me”.
Known for his animated Raceday antics, there was definitely quite a display on Saturday. But the trainer decided to put the big celebrations on ice. Having rather crack a bottle of scotch with apprentice Jace A.K.A Queensland’s baby-JMac. In saying that though we do want an invite to if there will be a party celebrating his maiden premiership title.
