BAKER SLAMS SYDNEY PRIZEMONEY

Bjorn Baker unloads on the distribution of prizemoney for Rosehill’s most valuable races, claiming it to be a large contributing factor to the ATC’s admissions that they are struggling to maintain the club’s facilities.

The Rosehill Turf Club has been under scrutiny since the ATC announced the proposed sale of the club, estimated to generate $4.8B for the ATC and 25,000 new houses. However, through a public submission to select a committee to be established to enquire into the proposed development, Warwick Farm-based trainer Bjorn Baker has come swinging into the scene, stating that races like the Golden Eagle and Big Dance could be large contributing factors to the dwindling of funds.

“Rosehill is regarded as a premier racecourse throughout Australia and the world. It is vital that Sydney has two premier racecourses that can host elite races,” Baker said.

“It is of concern to hear that the Chairman of the ATC, Peter McGauran, had told a recent meeting that $2 million should be spent annually on this task, but the ATC can only afford $4 million. This admission comes despite the significant funds available in prizemoney: The ATC’s five most valuable races are worth a total of $45 million.”

“While I have been the beneficiary of such prizemoney, I and others would contend that some races have prizemoney beyond their standing. For example, the Golden Eagle is worth $10 million and the Big Dance is worth $3 million.”.

“As a trainer in Sydney, the prizemoney on offer has been a great benefit, but the facilities available to trainers are substandard. The Rosehill boxes and training precinct are the most modern, largest, and well-managed stables in Sydney.”.
